Mark is a 7 year-old boy with lots of energy. At school he gets easily distracted and prefers to disturb the class rather than pay attention to his teacher. At home he doesn’t listen to his parents and their attempts to discipline don’t work. Mark is diagnosed with ADHD and is given Ritalin to help him “pay attention.”
Kathy is a 16 year-old teenager who prefers to be by herself or with animals, rather than with other people. She “hates” school and her grades show it, but she is very smart at other things, like making a “good case” for herself when arguing with her parents. She seems increasingly angry with her parents, her teachers, and the world.
These two scenarios described above are very common situations that Indigos face today. What can we do to help Mark, Kathy and other children in similar situations? The first thing we can do is understand why they are behaving this way. Then, address the cause of their behavior, pain, frustration, and anger.
The Indigos have come with a group soul purpose to change (consciously or unconsciously) what is “not working” in our society and what is not in integrity with our higher ideals. Lets listen to what they are trying to tell us, instead of labeling them as “trouble makers” or ADD/ADHD. By making changes in the way we do things to support these children’s needs, we help the earth be a better place.
Many Indigos are being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These children are being medicated with central nervous system stimulant drugs, like Ritalin, to help them comply with school activities, sit still and stop talking to their classmates while the teacher lectures. Basically, schools believe that there is something wrong with these children, rather than thinking that it is the school who needs to change. Indigos can’t comply with the school system because they cannot disassociate from their feelings, unless they get drugged.
These psycho-active drugs are very dangerous and their side-effects can cause major physical problems, including cardiovascular dysfunction, growth suppressions, and brain damage. Other serious psychiatric side-effects include agitation, aggression and depression. Attention “induced” by drugs does not help children learn how to make rational choices, be self-motivated or exert will power. It actually robs them from the opportunity to learn and disconnects them from their spiritual gifts.
Labeling children and medicating them makes them feel like they are “broken” and lowers their self-esteem. There are many natural and holistic approaches that can help Indigos and other sensitive children deal with their sensitivities and extra energy. All these alternative approaches are actually guiding us towards a more natural and healthy lifestyle. Maybe the Indigos are telling us that these ways are better for everyone. Maybe this is their way of communicating where the changes need to be made.
Holistic & Natural Ways to Help Indigos:
Nutrition
What we eat has a direct result in the way we feel and in our overall health. Indigo children are especially sensitive to toxins, including the ones in foods. Making the following changes in your children’s diet will have a direct impact in their behavior.

Clean your children’s diet of sugar, food coloring, and preservatives.

Give them multivitamins and mineral supplements. Make sure it includes magnesium, iron, copper, calcium, vitamins B-6, vitamin C, thiamine, folic acid and zinc.

Eat mostly an organic diet, free of hormones and pesticides.
-
Eliminate toxins in beverages (caffeine and carbonation).
-
Eliminate nitrates in cured meats (such as hot dogs, lunch meats, sausage, bacon).
-
Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Seratonin
Low levels of seratonin (the important brain chemical that regulates mood and energy levels) cause hyperactivity, irritability, cravings for junk food and refined carbohydrates, and bed-wetting. It is important that children produce enough seratonin, which is produced during the dream or REM cycle of sleep. Activities that help the body produce enough seratonin are:

Cardiovascular exercise (at least 10 minutes)

Sunshine exposure (20 minutes during non-peak hours, without glasses nor sunblock).

Good night’s sleep.
Sleep
It is crucial that children get enough sleep at night. For younger children that should be from 10 - 11 hours. For older children that should be from 8 - 10 hours. Not getting enough sleep can cause irritability, inability to focus, hyperactivity, and antisocial behaviors. Some solutions to insomnia are:

Aerobic exercise during the middle of the day (exercising 3 hours prior to bed promotes insomnia).

Avoid dietary stimulants like sugar, chocolate, caffeine, soda, and artificial sweeteners.

Avoid Ritalin, and other similar medications, which cause insomnia and increases heart beats.

Have a regular and predictable bedtime routine.

Pray before falling asleep. Give worries and fears to God.

If feeling afraid at bedtime, call on Archangel Michael to keep you protected and safe while you sleep. You can also surround your house with white light.
-
Decorate the bedroom with relaxing color schemes, calming pictures and lighting. Avoid stimulating toys and action figures in the bedroom.
Anger & Time Management
Indigos need help channeling their warrior energy. They need their anger as motivation to make changes, but they need to channel it in constructive ways. Encourage them to be socially active, so that they feel they are making a positive difference. Help them become activists by encouraging them to write letters to editors and teachers, write petitions, etc.
These children and young adults also need help with organizational skills to help them finish projects that they start. For example, breaking large tasks into smaller steps can be helpful, especially with schoolwork.
Education
A developed intuition is one of the spiritual gifts that Indigo children bring with them. These intuitive children can “read” people’s minds, emotions and energy fields. Sometimes when teachers lecture, the children already know what they are going to say. Many Indigos become bored in classrooms when their teachers lecture about something they already “get.” Other times they already know the topic is completely irrelevant to their life purpose or to the way life will be when they grow up.
Another cause of frustration and hyperactivity on Indigos comes when they are forced to perform meaningless tasks. They need to feel that what they are doing has an important meaning.
Our traditional educational system is based on left-brain functioning, which focuses on linear and logical ways of learning. Left-brain approaches expect children to learn through organized, repetitive, cumulative, and memorization methods. The problem is that Indigo children, gifted children and children labeled ADD/ADHD are almost always right-brain oriented. This means that they interact with the world more from the right hemisphere of the brain, which focuses on visions and feelings, is intuitive, creative and imaginative.
These children also need to experience the lessons, rather than memorize them. Some ways that a parent can help their Indigo child is to help them with their homework, give them opportunities to experience what they are learning and apply their work to something that they are interested in. Help them feel good about the way they learn. Instead of complying with what is most convenient to the school systems, parents can become advocates for their child and put pressure on the schools to modify their programs to fit the needs of this new generation of children.
Parenting
The most challenging aspect of parenting an Indigo is discipline. They need to be treated with respect and spoken to with dignity. The way we were disciplined, does not work with them. They do not relate to reward and punishment, and you cannot make them feel guilty or manipulate them. They see right through your intentions. These children and young adults relate best to loving, compassionate and respectful attitudes.
Meaning and purpose are of great importance to Indigos. Explain to them why, and if they agree with you, they’ll be more likely to cooperate. If you say, “because I said so,” you’ll be met with resistance. They also expect you to be role models for them and to be in integrity.
Children misbehave because their emotional needs are not being met. Regardless of their age, their basic needs are to belong, feel loved, feel powerful, feel valuable, and to experiment and explore. I recommend a very insightful, powerful and easy to read book, Redirecting Children’s Behavior by Kathryn Kvols. This book helps you determine which basic need your child is trying to meet through his/her misbehavior and offers appropriate ways for you and them to meet those needs.
Spiritual Healing
We are spiritual beings having a human experience. The Indigo children have come to Earth holding a vision of a perfect world from their memories of the spiritual world. This vision is what helps them make the changes needed here. But, the basic problem stems when the Indigos cannot cope with the differences between the highly imperfect world on Earth and their visions of perfection.
In their book, Spiritually Healing the Indigo Children (and Adult Indigos, Too!) A Practical Guide and Handbook, Wayne and Ellen Dosick very wisely state that, “their (Indigos) great pain comes from the dissonance they feel between their vision, and the wildly imperfect world they see and experience. Their pain is at a spiritual, emotional, energetic –soul– level. And, therefore, the healing for their pain must come from that same, emotional, energetic –soul– level.”
“Spiritually Healing the Indigo Children” offers step-by-step instructions for parents to facilitate the playing of specially developed games, which heal the child’s spiritual wounds at a soul-level.
There are many things we can do to help spiritual warriors like Mark and Kathy. They are magnificent and courageous beings who are here to make the Earth a better place. They are the answer to our prayers. It is we, their parents and teachers, who must understand the source of their pain, and must find ways to help our children feel safe and accepted on this Earth.
